Marco, a resident of the Clark Kerr Campus and a student in his second semester of freshman year, was discovered unresponsive on Tuesday afternoon.

Amid the somber circumstances, UC Berkeley spokesperson Janet Gilmore conveyed that the Berkeley Fire Department promptly responded to the situation, initiating life-saving measures. Tragically, by the time university police arrived, Marco had already been pronounced dead. Authorities have assured that there are no apparent signs of foul play, and a comprehensive investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Expressing the profound grief of the Wojcicki family, Marco’s grandmother, Esther Wojcicki, took to Facebook to confirm his identity and share memories of the vibrant young man. Describing him as the “most kind, loving, smart, fun, and beautiful human being,” she conveyed the family’s devastation, saying, “Our family is devastated beyond comprehension.”
In addition to excelling academically in his chosen field of math, Marco had built a strong community of friends, both within his dorm and fraternity. Esther Wojcicki fondly reminisced about the stories Marco would share about his life and friendships at Berkeley. The abrupt end to his promising life has left the family grappling with the loss of future opportunities and experiences that Marco would have shared with them.
While the exact cause of Marco Troper‘s death remains undetermined, Esther Wojcicki revealed concerns about a possible drug overdose. She emphasized that the family is awaiting the results of a toxicology report to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Marco’s passing.
