Bengali actor Anjana Bhowmick passed away at 79 after being admitted to a south Kolkata hospital on Friday night due to respiratory issues.
Renowned Bengali actor Anjana Bhowmick, aged 79, breathed her last after being admitted to a hospital in south Kolkata on Friday night due to respiratory complications. Her demise occurred on Saturday morning. The veteran actor, known for her captivating on-screen chemistry with the late Uttam Kumar, was also the mother-in-law of actor Jisshu Sengupta.

Anjana had been grappling with long-term health issues associated with old age, enduring a bedridden state for the past five to six months. Throughout her challenging health journey, Anjana received devoted care from her daughters, Nilanjana and Chandana.
The presence of celebrities such as director Srijit Mukherji and Arindam Sil, among others from the Bengali film industry, offered support to Jisshu and Nilanjana at the hospital following Anjana’s passing.
Looking back at Anjana Bhowmick’s illustrious career, she marked her entry into the film industry at the age of 20 with the 1964 Bengali film “Anustup Chanda.” Notably, she changed her name to Anjana before the release of her debut film. Her collaboration with Uttam Kumar in films like “Thana Theke Aschi,” “Chowringhee,” “Nayika Sambad,” and “Kabhi Megh” contributed to her recognition and popularity.
Anjana’s performance alongside Soumitra Chatterjee in the 1967 film “Maheshweta” earned accolades. Despite her significant contributions to Bengali cinema, Anjana Bhowmick decided to step away from the film industry many years ago.
