The Marvels
“The Marvels” fulfills an essential role within the Multiverse Saga, setting the stage for upcoming superhero ensembles, which are likely to take center stage in future installments.

In a delightful convergence of two Marvel series and a movie, a brand-new film emerges, offering a sequel of sorts to the 2019 hit, “Captain Marvel,” starring the talented Brie Larson in the iconic titular role. This time, she unites forces with Kamala Khan, portrayed by Iman Vellani from “Ms. Marvel” (2022), and Monica Rambeau, portrayed by Teyonah Parris, who first appeared in “WandaVision” (2021).

Kamala christens their newfound trio as “The Marvels,” much to the chagrin of Monica, who isn’t quite on board with her superhero alias, “Professor Marvel.”

“Multiverse Madness” unfolds as “The Marvels” embarks on a cosmic adventure, but it doesn’t dive headfirst into the dizzying complexities of the Multiverse, a theme that has been a prominent feature in recent Marvel installments. Instead, the film wisely navigates through the narratives of just four planets, including Earth, and the intriguing spaces in between. When the motives of the villain, Dar-Benn, played by Zawe Ashton, come to light, the choice of planets and intergalactic escapades makes perfect sense within the storyline.

A brand new world, Aladna, stands out as a refreshing departure from the typical Marvel settings. It appears more like a page from an Asterix comic book than the traditional Marvel universe. Resembling Wakanda, Aladna boasts a natural, VFX-free environment, with a landscape akin to a Corsican island that adds an exotic yet relatable charm.

What truly sets Aladna apart is its primary language: song and dance, allowing Marvel’s Disney magic to infuse the film with a musical twist. The presence of Park Seo-joon as Prince Yan adds an intriguing dimension to the mystery of how Captain Marvel found herself on this unique planet.

Director Nia DaCosta and co-writers Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik expand the time-space interplay beyond the intergalactic scale. As seen at the end of “Ms. Marvel,” Kamala and Carol Danvers discover a fascinating connection as they swap abilities due to their shared electromagnetic energy.

Monica Rambeau later joins the mix, leading to a fun training montage where the three women practice these extraordinary swaps. While this concept promises exciting action sequences, it falls slightly short of delivering its full potential.

“The Marvels” fulfills an essential role within the Multiverse Saga, setting the stage for upcoming superhero ensembles, which are likely to take center stage in future installments. It would have been a delight to witness Zawe’s villain facing off against Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, given their real-life connection as husband and wife. However, Marvel prioritizes its unique storytelling approach over real-life crossovers.

The film’s primary focus is on female empowerment, with female characters who, in the past, played secondary or supporting roles to male superheroes, now making cameo appearances. Nonetheless, it’s Brie Larson who shoulders most of the narrative weight. While “The Marvels” lacks the explosive women empowerment moments seen in the final battle of “Avengers: Endgame,” where female superheroes united in a powerful display, it carves its own path.

The film opts for a more frantic pace over deep character introspection and redemption arcs. Brie Larson skillfully portrays her character’s internal struggles in the limited time she has before she must spring into action to save the world. Kamala’s journey from an Avengers fan to a potential team leader, reminiscent of Nick Fury assembling The Avengers, offers a fresh narrative perspective.

Monica’s unresolved issues with Carol hint at emotional depth but lack the screen time for a truly heartfelt exchange. Character developments, at times, feel more like checkboxes to mark off rather than fully realized arcs.

Amidst the superhero chaos, “The Marvels” provides entertaining moments through two charming yet compact subplots. One involves the humorous banter between Nick Fury and Kamala’s traditionalist parents, with her mother humorously referring to Fury as “Nicholas.” The father’s reaction upon witnessing a spaceship descent into Earth leads to a comical and endearing moment.

The other delightful subplot revolves around a group of cats, the offspring of Goose, creating chaos on a space station as they occupy limited evacuation pods. Their subsequent return to Earth, with some unexpected passengers, results in a delightfully absurd sequence. If “The Marvels” doesn’t delve into profound character development or high-stakes drama, it compensates with these amusingly quirky episodes.
