In a heartfelt Instagram story, Patel conveyed her dismay, stating, “It has come to my attention that someone created a deepfake video using my body and a popular Bollywood actress’s face. I had no involvement with the deepfake video, and I’m deeply disturbed and upset by what is happening.”
Furthermore, Patel used her platform to advocate for vigilance in the age of information, urging her followers to exercise caution and conduct fact-checks before unquestioningly accepting content they encounter on the internet. She asserted, “Please take a step back and fact-check what you see on the Internet. Not everything on the Internet is real.”
The deepfake video in question quickly went viral, featuring Patel, clad in black attire, entering an elevator. However, her image had been extensively manipulated through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to give the appearance of Rashmika Mandanna stepping into the lift.
The truth behind this alarming deepfake video was uncovered when a diligent fact checker shared the original and manipulated clips on social media. The post captured the attention of veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, who retweeted it with the comment, “Yes, this is a strong case for legal action.”
Rashmika Mandanna, whose likeness was exploited in the deepfake video, also expressed her distress about the situation. In a tweet, she wrote, “I feel really hurt to share this and have to talk about the deepfake video of me being spread online. Something like this is honestly, extremely scary not only for me, but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused.”
