Mahalaya is one of the most important festivals of hindus and it is celebrated a week before Durga puja celebrations. It marks the beginning of Debi Paksha and the end of Pitru Paksha or Shradh. This year, Mahalaya falls on Saturday, October 14.
Mahalaya 2023:- Shubh Muhurat
Amavasya tithi begins at 09:50 pm on October 13, 2023 and Amavasya tithi ends at 11:24 pm on October 14, 2023. According to Drik Panchang, Kutup Muhurat will last from 11:44 AM to 12:30 PM, Rohina Muhurat from 12:30 PM to 01:16 PM and Aparahna Kaal from 01:16 PM to 03:35 PM on October 14, 2023.

Mahalaya 2023:- Significance
Mahalaya is celebrated with full of enthusiasm especially in West Bengal as it marks the beginning of durga puja celebrations. Bengalis wake up early in the morning and start the day by listening rendition of Mahishasura Mardini on All India Radio. It is believed that Maa Durga comes on earth from Kailash Parvat on this day with her divine powers.
This year, Durga puja will begin on Friday, October 20, 2023 and end on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
During Mahalaya, elder members of the family remember their ancestors and pay tribute to them. Sculptors design only Maa Durga’s eyes on this day, fill colours in them and perform puja before doing the same.
Mahalaya 2023:- Rituals
Bengalis and devotees of Maa Durga wake up early in the morning and perform a ritual Tarpan in which water is offered to the departed souls of ancestors. They offer prayers to ancestors and distribute bhog among family members and Brahmins.
