Every year International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated on October 11 to promote the girls’ rights and gender equality. This day recognises the importance of girls in the development of the society. By educating a girl, we can educate our future generations.
Now-a-days, girls are doing work in every type of field but at some places, there is still a gender inequality who doesn’t give equitable opportunities to girls. Therefore, Girl child day is celebrated to promote the girls and their work.

International Day of the Girl Child:- History
On December 19, 2011 the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to celebrate October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. First time it was celebrated on October 11, 2012. Since then, it has been celebrated every year and a particular theme is decided for this day. This year, the world is celebrating the 11th anniversary of International Day of the Girl Child.
International Day of the Girl Child 2023:- Theme
The theme of International Day of the Girl Child 2023 is “Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being”.
UNICEF said, “there is an urgent need for increased attention and resourcing for the key areas that enable girls to realize their rights and achieve their full potential.”

International Day of the Girl Child:- Importance
Empowerment of girls and gender equality will lead to a better society. Girls face many issues like child marriage, unequal education and other society norms which are the barriers in their growth.
Adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated and healthy life and these are not only the rights of adolescent girls but also of the mature women. If the girl is well educated in the adolescent age then she will become the tomorrow’s worker, mother, entrepreneur, mentor, household heads and political leader. Girl has a power to change the world if she is empowered well on time.
According to the UNICEF, this year’s flagship International Day of the Girl event, organized with Plan International and other partners, will explore opportunities for improving resourcing to girls and the issues that affect them.
