Golden Ducks:- Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer create unwanted records against Australia in World Cup 2023

Unfortunately, on October 8, Indian openers Ishan Kishan, captain Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer set an unfortunate record by all getting out for a golden duck while chasing a 200-run target against Australia in the World Cup 2023.

In their debut match of the 2023 ICC Men’s World Cup at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India found themselves facing off against their formidable rivals, Australia. Regrettably, on the 8th of October, the Indian team witnessed an unexpected turn of events as all three of their opening batters – Ishan Kishan, skipper Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer – were sent back to the pavilion without a single run to their names while pursuing a target of 200 runs.

This collective failure etched an undesirable record in the cricketing history of India, marking the first instance in men’s One Day Internationals (ODIs) where the entire top order failed to score. Furthermore, this disappointing performance constituted the seventh occurrence in the Men’s ODI World Cup, wherein both opening batsmen from a team departed with a score of zero.

Reflecting on history, a similar incident took place in 2004 during a men’s ODI match in the VB series against Zimbabwe, where both Indian openers faced the rare fate of scoring ducks.

The unraveling of this unfortunate scenario in the 2023 World Cup match had its pivotal moments. Australia’s left-arm pacer, Mitchell Starc, delivered a significant blow to Ishan Kishan in the fourth delivery of the opening over, resulting in Kishan’s early exit.

Subsequently, in the second over, Josh Hazlewood’s precise delivery found Rohit Sharma’s leg, prompting an LBW appeal. Despite Rohit’s attempt to defend, the ball’s movement led to his dismissal in front of the stumps. Following suit, Shreyas Iyer fell victim to Hazlewood in the same over, caught by David Warner at short cover.

In essence, the match unfolded as a challenging initiation for India in the 2023 World Cup, accentuated by the unexpected and historic batting collapse against Australia’s adept bowling attack.
