India will celebrate the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, 2024. He is also known as the “Father of the Nation” in India.

Mahatma Gandhi made India independent without using any violence. He always promoted Non-Violence. So, October 2 is also celebrated as the International Day of Non-violence across the world. The United Nations General assembly passed the resolution on June 15, 2007 to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi who promoted the Non-violence.
Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. He was a lawyer by profession. The title “Father of the Nation” was given to him by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose for his relentless struggles for Independence.

On Gandhi Jayanti, leaders of the parties including Prime Minister Narendra Modi pay floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, New Delhi where he was cremated.
The title ‘Mahatma’ was given to Gandhi by India’s first Nobel laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Mahatma Gandhi is also popularly known as ‘Bapu’.

Schools, colleges and other institutions organise essay, painting, speech and many other competitions on this day. These competitions are organised to promote the ideas of Gandhi and to remember his struggles which he did during the Indian Independence movement.
In 2019, on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had released the coin of Rs 150.
Gandhi Jayanti is a national holiday. All the public institutions, banks and buildings remain closed on this day. Gandhi Jayanti is one of the three national festivals of India, along with Republic Day (26 January) and Independence Day (15 August).
