Despite the erroneous news causing an outpouring of condolences on social media, it was revealed that the misinformation originated from a fictitious social media post falsely attributed to economic historian Claudia Goldin. The post, traced back to a newly created account in May 2023, led to a swift correction by news agency PTI.
