Four time National Award winner Art Director Nitin Desai has passed away at the age of 57. He was best known for his work in Slumdog Millionaire, Lagaan, Jodhaa Akbar, Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai.
Renowned art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai has passed away on Wednesday morning. As per some initial reports, he died due to suicide but the official confirmation has not been received yet.
His dead body was found at his ND Studio in Karjat on August 2, 2023. Police is trying to find the cause of his death and the further details will be provided after investigation.
“We have found the body of art director Nitin Desai hanging in his studio in Karjat. Police were informed about this by a worker on the set. When police team reached the studio we saw his body hanging. We are investigating the case further for ascertaining all the aspects in this case,” Raigad SP told to ANI.
Nitin Desai has won four National Awards
Nitin Desai was a four-time National Award winner which he won for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Lagaan and Devdas. During his two decades long career, he worked with many directors including Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Ashutosh Gowarikar.

Desai’s notable works include Slumdog Millionaire, Lagaan, Jodhaa Akbar, Munnabhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munna Bhai and Bajirao Mastani, among others.
Maharashtra MLA Mahesh Baldi confirmed the death news of Nitin Desai and said, “He was under financial stress and this could be the only reason for suicide.”
In 2005, Desai opened ND Studio, which has been spread over 52 acres. His last project as an art director was with Ashutosh Gowarikar on the 2019 film Panipat.
Nitin Desai‘s directorial work includes Hello Jai Hind! (2011) and Ajintha (2012).
