International Day of Yoga is celebrated on June 21 every year across the world. Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice originated in India. The word ‘Yoga’ has been derived from Sanskrit words ‘Yuj’ and ‘Yujir’ which means together or to unite. Yoga unites body and mind.

International Day of Yoga 2024:- History

The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi proposed the International Day of Yoga during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014 and it was endorsed by 177 countries.

Narendra Modi suggested June 21 as the Yoga Day because it is a summer solstice, the longest day of the year on the northern hemisphere.

The first ever International Day of Yoga was celebrated on June 21, 2015. Since then, it has been celebrated every year all over the world.

Every year, a theme is decided on this day. The theme of International Day of Yoga 2024 is “Yoga for Self and Society.” This year marks the 10th International Day of Yoga.

The roots of Yoga are connected with India. The ancient sages of India used to perform yoga. As mentioned earlier, Yoga means togetherness of body with the soul. It helps in maintaining the well-being of body and mind.

Earlier, people were not aware of yoga and its benefits but now people started practising yoga with full of enthusiasm. Yoga removes stress and anxiety and fill the life with peace, harmony and happiness.

Yoga improves the immunity of the body and makes a person fit and healthy. It gives relaxation to the mind and prevents depression and overthinking.

Yoga costs nothing but gives a lot in return. A person just need a little space to perform it. Many yoga trainings, practices and competitions are organised on this day to spread awareness about the yoga.
