World Wildlife Day 2023: World Wildlife Day is celebrated on March 3 every year across the world. The theme of this year’s World Wildlife Day is “Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation“.
Each year, World Wildlife Day is celebrated on March 3 across the world. It raises awareness of the wildlife of fauna and flora and its importance to achieve the UN sustainable development goals. Wildlife has various contributions, including ecological, social, genetic, recreational, scientific, economic and cultural.
The day is also observed to conserve the endangered species and restore their habitats. It is also essential for the survival of human beings on the earth. World Wildlife day has now become the most important global annual event dedicated to wildlife.
World Wildlife Day 2023:- History
On December 20, 2013 the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed resolution to designate March 3 as World Wildlife Day. On this day in 1973, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was adopted to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wide fauna and flora.
CITES aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species. March 3, 2023 will be a very special date, as it will also be marking the 50th anniversary of CITES.
World Wildlife Day 2023:- Theme
Every year a new theme is decided on this day. In recognition of the work CITES does and the collaborative work for conservation that is going on globally, the theme for World Wildlife Day this year is “Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation“.
The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is teaming up with five partners to make the World Wildlife Day celebration special. These partners are the United States Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Jackson Wild, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and National Geographic Society.

World Wildlife Day 2023:- Significance
Over 8400 species of wild fauna and flora are critically endangered while 30000 species are understood to be endangered. As per wildlife.org, over a million species are threatened with extinction.
The protection of wildlife, habitats and the ecosystem is important not only for the well-being of the fauna and flora but also for the well-being of human beings as it fulfills our basic needs, including food, shelter, medicines and clothing.
“Today and every day, let us all do our part to preserve natural habitats and build a thriving future for all living beings,” UN Secretary General António Guterres said.
