World Food Day is celebrated on October 16 every year across the world. This day commemorates the date of founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). World Food day spreads awareness about the hunger and starvation which has been facing by the large number of population in the world.
Besides Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), other organisations such as World Food programme (WFP), World Health Organisation (WHO) and International Fund for Agricultural Development also celebrate this day. World Food Day is celebrated by 150 countries across the globe every year.
World Food Day 2022:- Theme
The theme of World Food Day 2022 is “Leave NO ONE behind”. World Food Day 2022 is being marked in a year with multiple global challenges including the ongoing pandemic, conflict, climate change, rising prices and international tensions. All of this is affecting global food security.
“We need to build a sustainable world where everyone, everywhere has regular access to enough nutritious food. No one should be left behind,” FAO said.
World Food Day 2022:- History
Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of United Nations was established in 1945. World Food Day was established by FAO’s member countries at the Organisation’s 20th General Conference in November, 1979.
The former Hungarian Agriculture and Food minister Dr. Pal Romany played a significant role in the 20th General Conference and suggested the idea of celebrating this day. First ever World Food Day was celebrated in 1981, since then this day has been celebrated every year.

World Food Day 2022:- Significance
Covid-19 pandemic has realised the importance of food in life. During this period, many people suffered from hunger and starvation. This issue is more vulnerable in the developing countries. According to the FAO, more than 3 billion people (almost 40% of the world’s population) across the world can’t afford a healthy diet.
In 2021, some 193 million people experienced high acute food insecurity, requiring humanitarian assistance for their survival, while over half a million faced Catastrophe conditions, meaning starvation and death.
Energy is required for doing any kind of work and only nutritious food can give us that energy. Vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, calcium and iron are very important for the body so that it can work properly. Healthy and nutritious food also protects from number of diseases.
Food is a fundamental and basic human right and adequate calories should be reached to the weaker section of the society. Several institutions are working towards this. They ensure access to safe and nutritious food to those who can’t afford it easily.
