The theme of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer or World Ozone Day 2022 is “Montreal Protocol @35: Global Cooperation Protecting Life on Earth.”
International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer or World Ozone Day is celebrated on September 16 every year across the world. It raises awareness about the importance of ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, which protects earth from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun.
World Ozone Day 2022:- History
In the early 1970s, Scientists had come to know that human actions were depleting Ozone layer and creating a hole in the ozone.
As a result in 1987, Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer was signed by 45 nations of the world. Its aim was to control the usage of substances or chemicals which deplete the ozone layer.
In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed September 16 as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, the date of the signing of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. Since then, it has been celebrated every year.
After 30 years of signing this protocol, Ozone layer is healing and the hole is filling.

World Ozone Day 2022:- Theme
The theme of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer or World Ozone Day 2022 is “Montreal Protocol @35: Global Cooperation Protecting Life on Earth.” This theme recognises the positive effect of Montreal Protection and shows that the global cooperation can protect life on earth.
World Ozone Day 2022:- Significance
The ozone layer protects earth from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays of the sun and makes life possible on the earth. Ultraviolet rays can cause skin cancer, cataracts and other health-related complications.
Human made substances and chemicals are depleting ozone layer. The gases which come out of refrigerators and air conditioners are harmful for the ozone layer. Humans need to work together to protect the ozone layer which is very necessary for future generations.
