Former Prime minister of Japan Shinzo Abe has died hours after being shot in Nara city. He was the longest-serving Prime minister of Japan held office in 2006 for a year and from 2012 to 2020.
Former Prime minister of Japan Shinzo Abe has died hours after being shot during a campaign speech in Nara city, western Japan. He was 67.
Shinzo Abe had been giving a stump speech in Nara city ahead of Sunday’s upper house elections. During his speech, a person from behind fired two shots on him. He was taken to a hospital as he collapsed after the attack.
“The first shot sounded like a toy. He didn’t fall and there was a large bang. The second shot was more visible, you could see the spark and smoke,” a young woman at the scene told NHK.
“After the second shot, people surrounded him and gave him cardiac massage”.
Reportedly, a suspected man of 41-year old has been detained by the police and a gun has been confiscated from him.
Shinzo Abe was the longest-serving Prime minister of Japan held office in 2006 for a year and from 2012 to 2020. He stepped down as PM in 2020 due to resurfacing of chronic health problem.
Japan has some of the world’s toughest gun-control laws. Getting a gun license is a long and complicated process even for Japanese citizens, who must first get a recommendation from a shooting association and then undergo strict police checks.
