International forests day is celebrated on March 21 every year since 2012. It raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. Countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns.

The organizers are the United Nations Forum on Forests and the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with Governments and other relevant institutions in the field.

On November 28, 2012, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed March 21 as International Day of Forests. The first International Day of Forests was celebrated on March 21, 2013.

Every year, a theme is decided on this day. The theme of International Day of Forests 2022 is “Forests and Sustainable Production and Consumption.” The theme is chosen by Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF).

International Day of Forests 2022:- Significance

Forests are home to about 80% of terrestrial biodiversity, with more than 60,000 tree species. Forests are 30% of the world’s land. However, 13 million hectares of forests are lost each year.

Forests play a crucial role in poverty alleviating and in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. Forests contribute to the prosperity and well-being of current and future generations.

Around 1.6 billion people depend directly on forests for food, shelter, energy, fiber, medicines and livelihoods. These and many other aspects of our lives are linked to forests in one way or another.

Wood, which comes from forests, provide bacteria-free food and water in many kitchens. It create new fibers for our clothes and helps in buliding countless furniture and utensils. Wood is a renewable resource and can be protected with sustainable development of forests.
