National youth day is celebrated on January 12 as Swami Vivekananda was born on this day in 1863. In 1984, the Indian government declared that Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary would be celebrated as National Youth Day to honour him and his work for the youth. First time it was celebrated on January 12, 1985.
National Youth Day 2022:- Significance
Schools and colleges celebrate this day by organising various activities across India. The writings and life-lessons of Swami Vivekananda is remembered. The speeches, essay-writing competitions, presentations, quizzes, sports and fun activities are held on this day. School and college students take part in these competitions and prizes are distributed to the winners.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 25th National Youth Festival in Puducherry, via video conferencing. During the event, the Prime Minister unveiled selected essays on “Mere Sapno ka Bharat” and “Unsung Heroes of Indian Freedom Movement.” These essays have been selected from submissions by over 1 lakh youth on the two themes.

Swami Vivekananda’s influence
Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863 as Narendranath Datta in Kolkata. He was a chief disciple of the 19th century Indian mystic Ramakrishna Paramahansa. Swamiji discovered the Ramakrishna math and the Ramakrishna mission.
Swami Vivekananda is best known for his speech in Chicago in 1893. In this speech, he introduced Hinduism to the western world. He was an inspiration for the youth. His teachings and writings are still an inspiration. That’s why his birth anniversary is celebrated as National Youth Day in India.
