The 18 years old Praveen Kumar wins silver medal in Men’s High jump T64 event. He creates asian record by clearing 2.07m mark. He was classified in T44 class by International Paralympic Committee but he was also eligible for T64 class.

India’s Praveen Kumar clinches silver medal in Men’s high jump T64 event on friday with the best jump of 2.07m. With this jump he creates new asian record. He wins India’s 11 medal in the paralympics. India’s medal tally in the ongoing paralympics is skyrocketing. It is proving India’s best paralympics.

Great Britain’s Jonathan Broom Edwards wins gold medal in this event with the best jump of 2.10m. He is also the silver medallist in Rio 2016 paralympics. Maciej Lepiato of Poland clinches bronze medal with 2.04m jump.
18 years old Praveen Kumar started with the mark of 1.83m. He jumped 1.88m in his first attempt. Then, 1.93m and 1.97m also jumped in first attempt. The mark of 2.01m, he couldn’t jump in first attempt but cleared in his second attempt. He cleared 2.04m in the first attempt and 2.07m in second attempt which is also a new asian record.
There was the chance of gold for Praveen when Jonathan couldn’t clear the mark of 2.07m in his two attempts but he cleared this mark in third attempt. Lepiato couldn’t clear 2.07m in his all three attempts. So, he was out in the race of gold. Then, Jonathan and Praveen’s next target was 2.10m. Praveen failed in clearing this mark and Jonathan cleared 2.10m in his second attempt. He didn’t try to jump 2.13m.
Praveen’s impairment is congenital, affects bones which connect his hip to his left leg. Prime minister Narendra Modi congratulates Praveen Kumar.

He was classified in T44 class by International Paralympic Committee but he was also eligible for T64 class. This class includes the leg deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power or impaired passive range of movement in the legs.
Earlier this year, Praveen had won gold at World Para Athletics GP with 2.05m. He missed bronze in 2019 Junior World Para Athletics Championships. He finished at fourth place which was enough for quailfying in Tokyo paralympics.
