Karnataka Hijab row:- Karnataka Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai orders closure of high schools and colleges for three days as hijab controversy intensified in the state, violence reported from several districts.
“I appeal to all the students, teachers and management of schools and colleges as well as people of karnataka to maintain peace and harmony.I have ordered closure of all high schools and colleges for next three days. All concerned are requested to cooperate,” CM Bommai tweeted.
Hijab controversy arose when students wearing hijab were denied entry in the Govt PU College in Kundapur area of Udupi, Karnataka. The Karnataka High Court is hearing plea against denial of entry to hijab-clad students in schools and colleges.
Karnataka High Court says that we will go by reason, by law, not by passion or emotions. We will go by what Constitution says. Constitution is the Bhagavad Gita for me.
Karnataka education department had said earlier that all government schools should follow the uniform dress code, declared by the state government. Students from private institutions should follow the dress decided by the school management.
“We’re awaiting directions from Karnataka HC. I appeal to students to maintain peace & harmony. I’ve directed school administration to see there’re no clashes b/w students. Appeal to all concerned persons from outside not to make provocative statements,” CM Bommai on hijab row said to ANI.
In some places, the saffron flag has been hoisted instead of national flag. The Karnataka High Court said it will resume hearing at 2:30 pm on wednesday.
