Discover how Sofia Coppola fought streaming giants, uncovering their aversion to ‘unlikable women,’ and her triumphant comeback in this exclusive story. A filmmaker’s resilience in a changing industry.
Sofia Coppola has encountered hurdles in securing the green light for her projects from major streaming platforms, even someone as renowned as her. In a recent interview with The New York Times, the acclaimed filmmaker disclosed that her collaboration with Apple TV took an unexpected turn when they decided to discontinue her series. The reason? Apple TV was hesitant to feature an “unlikable woman” as the central character.
This creative divergence led to a gradual reduction in the budget allocated to her ambitious five-hour limited series. Sofia emphasized the implications of who holds the decision-making power in the industry, shedding light on the challenges women and their complex, multifaceted characters face when navigating the world of streaming entertainment.

Sofia’s shelved series was an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s timeless 1913 novel, “The Custom of the Country.” The story revolved around Undine Spragg, a social climber who persuades her wealthy parents to leave the Midwest and establish roots in New York. There, she employs her charms to ensnare a prominent young man into marriage. However, her insatiable greed and unwavering ambition eventually unravel her relationship and lead to dire consequences.
It’s worth noting that Sofia had previously collaborated with Apple TV, directing the 2020 dramedy “On The Rocks.” The film featured Rashida Jones and Bill Murray in a daughter-father dynamic, with Bill’s character suspecting her husband of infidelity under the guise of excessive work hours.
The story explores the complexities of relationships, revealing more about the father’s regrets than the husband’s faithfulness. “On The Rocks” received critical acclaim upon its release.

Interestingly, following the setback with her series adaptation of “The Custom of the Country,” Sofia Coppola redirected her creative energies. She delved into Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, “Elvis and Me: The True Story of the Love Between Priscilla Presley and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”
Inspired by the book, she acquired the rights and embarked on directing a film adaptation. The upcoming movie features Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as the central characters, promising to captivate audiences when it hits U.S. cinemas on November 3rd.
