The former frontman of the rock band Smash Mouth, Steve Harwell, who is 56 years old, is currently under hospice care at his residence, as confirmed by the band’s manager on Sunday.

As confirmed by Robert Hayes, who has been Steve Harwell’s manager for an extended period, the 56-year-old singer is presently “resting at home” and is receiving attentive care from his fiancée and hospice professionals. The family has earnestly requested privacy during this challenging period.
Harwell’s health has sadly deteriorated to the point where he is now in the final stages of liver failure, primarily stemming from a history of alcohol abuse.

Harwell’s retirement from Smash Mouth was officially announced in October 2021, subsequent to a troubled performance at a beer and wine festival known as The Big Sip in New York.
His onstage behavior, which included slurred speech, offensive language directed at the audience, and a gesture resembling a Nazi salute, garnered significant attention and ultimately led to his departure from the band.
Subsequent to the controversial performance, Steve Harwell’s representatives issued a news release asserting that the viral video had been “taken out of context,” thereby misrepresenting the singer. In an official statement provided to USA TODAY, Harwell’s representatives disclosed that the frontman had been grappling with health challenges for the past eight years, originating from his diagnosis of cardiomyopathy.
This heart condition led to severe medical complications for Harwell, including heart failure and acute Wernicke encephalopathy, which notably impacted his speech and memory. According to his representative, Harwell exhibited numerous symptoms related to his medical condition during the ill-fated 2021 performance.
Smash Mouth initially rose to prominence in the late 1990s with the release of their major-label debut, “Fush Yu Mang,” which achieved sales of two million copies. The subsequent album, “Astro Lounge,” featured the Billboard Hot 100 hit “All Star.” The band also made a significant contribution to the soundtrack of the animated film “Shrek” in 2001.
