On December 25, 2021, there is the 97th birth anniversary of former Prime minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In 2014, PM Narendra Modi announced that this day would be celebrated as Good Governance Day. Since then, Vajpayee’s birth anniversary is celebrated as Good Governance Day in India.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee had been nine times elected as Lok Sabha member and twice as Rajya Sabha member. He was the co-founder and senior leader of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). He became the prime minister of India thrice.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the first prime minister of India who hadn’t belonged to Indian National Congress. First time, he became the prime minister in 1996 but his term ended just after 13 days. Again he became prime minister for 13 months from 1998 to 1999. During his this tenure, Pokharan-II Nuclear test in 1998 and Kargil War in 1999 were the highlighted ones.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the prime minister of India again for full term of five years from 1999 to 2004. Besides politician, he was also a prolific poet and a writer. He was an active member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

After 2009, Vajpayee didn’t participate in politics anymore due to poor health and remained away from public engagements.
In 2015, he was conferred the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour of India.
In June, 2018 he was admitted to AIIMS in critical condition following a kidney infection. On August 16, 2018 he died at the age of 93 due to age related illnesses.
