Tokyo Paralympics:- Mariyappan Thangavelu wins silver medal and Sharad Kumar clinches bronze in men’s high jump T63 event

 India’s para high jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu wins silver medal in men’s high jump T63 event with the best of 1.86m and Sharad Kumar clinches bronze medal in the same event with the personal best of 1.83m. Before Thangavelu and Sharad, Indian para shooter Singhraj Adana bagged bronze medal on tuesday.

India’s para high jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu wins silver medal in men’s high jump T63 event with the best of 1.86m and Sharad Kumar clinches bronze medal in the same event with the personal best of 1.83m. India’s Varun Singh Bhati finished at 7th place with the personal best of 1.77m.

US’s Sam Grewe clinched gold medal in this event. There was a fight between Thangavelu and Grewe for the gold medal. Sam Grewe cleared the mark of 1.88m in his last and final attempt while Thangavelu couldn’t clear this mark. As a result, Sam Grewe won the gold medal. American was the silver medallist in Rio 2016 paralympics.

The mark of 1.73m, 1.77m and 1.83m had been easily cleared by both Thangavelu and Sharad. Thangavelu also cleared the mark of 1.86m while Sharad failed in clearing this mark but he confirmed his bronze medal. Bhati was cleared the mark of 1.77m but he failed to clear the mark of 1.83m.

This is the second medal of Mariyappan Thangavelu in the paralympics. He had won the gold medal in Rio 2016 paralympics while Varun Singh Bhati was the bronze medallist in that olympics who finished at 7th position in Tokyo.

On tuesday, India won total three medals in the paralympics. Before Thangavelu and Sharad, Indian para shooter Singhraj Adana bagged bronze medal with the total score of 216.8 in the P1 men’s 10m air pistol SH1 event. India’s Manish Narwal finished at 7th spot in this event with the total score of 135.8 while he had topped the qualification round with 575 points but he couldn’t continue this performance in the final.

This event completely dominated by chinese para shooters. China’s Chao Yang won gold medal with the total score of 237.9 (paralympic record). Silver medal too bagged by China’s Huang Xing with 237.5 total score. 

There was a competition between Singhraj and China’s Lou Xiaolong for the bronze medal. During the last shot, Singhraj scored 9.1 points and he was on fourth place at that time. Lou Xiaolong scored only 8.6 points in the last shot which led Singhraj to 3rd position.
