Mariah Carey has shared the heartbreaking news that both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, passed away on the same day over the weekend.

Mariah also shared that she was grateful for the time she spent with her mother in the days leading up to her passing. “I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to be with my mom during her final days,” she said. “I appreciate the outpouring of love and support, and I ask for privacy as I navigate this overwhelming loss.”
At this time, no further details regarding the causes of death for Patricia and Alison have been disclosed.
Patricia, who was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey, was a classically trained opera singer and vocal coach with a background from Juilliard. She and Alfred had three children together—Alison, Mariah, and their son, Morgan. The couple eventually divorced when Mariah was just three years old.
Throughout her life, Mariah had a complex and multifaceted relationship with her mother, who passed on her musical talents. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer reflected on the intricacies of their bond. “My relationship with my mother has always been filled with contradictions and a spectrum of emotions. It’s never been simple, but rather a mix of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment,” Mariah wrote.
Despite the challenges, Mariah and her mother maintained a connection over the years. In 2010, they performed together in a special Christmas duet for ABC’s Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You, singing “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus.”

In her memoir, Mariah also acknowledged her mother, dedicating part of the book to her: “And to Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I believe truly did her best. I will love you as best as I can, always.”
Mariah’s relationship with her sister Alison was also complicated. In her memoir, she explained that for her own well-being, it was sometimes necessary to distance herself from both Alison and Morgan.
