A preliminary post-mortem report on the post-graduate trainee doctor found dead at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has confirmed that she was sexually assaulted before being murdered.

In connection with this shocking incident, one person has been arrested as protests erupted among junior doctors of the state-run hospital, and the BJP criticized the state government over law and order.

Police revealed that the arrested individual had unrestricted access to various departments of the hospital, leading to his capture after careful review of CCTV footage.

“We have arrested an outsider whose activities are suspicious, and he appears to be directly involved in the crime,” a police official told PTI. Additionally, two intern doctors have been questioned by the police as part of the investigation.

The grim details of the autopsy report indicate that the victim suffered severe trauma before her death. The four-page report disclosed that she was bleeding from her private parts and had multiple injuries on various parts of her body. “There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, along with injuries on her face, neck, abdomen, left leg, right hand, and ring finger,” the report stated.

According to the police, the incident occurred between 3 and 6 am, with evidence pointing to strangulation followed by smothering as the cause of death.

“Her neck bone was found broken, suggesting she was first strangled and then smothered. We are awaiting the full autopsy report, which will provide more insights to identify the culprits,” said a Kolkata Police officer.

In response to the heinous crime, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by the Kolkata Police, including members from the homicide department, to thoroughly probe the incident.

The victim’s semi-nude body was discovered on Friday morning inside the seminar hall of the hospital. Her father has alleged that she was raped and murdered within the hospital premises, and accused authorities of attempting to cover up the truth. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has since reached out to the victim’s parents, assuring them that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

A doctor at the hospital, speaking anonymously to PTI, revealed that the victim had dinner with her juniors around 2 am before heading to the seminar room to rest, as there was no designated on-call room. Her body was found there in the morning.

The incident has sparked outrage, with TMC MP Saugata Roy condemning the crime as “shameful” and expressing hope that the culprits will be swiftly apprehended. “Our heads hang in shame. It’s tragic that such an atrocity happened to a doctor,” Roy stated.

In the wake of the tragedy, students of the medical college staged a candlelight march and held protests outside the hospital, demanding justice for the victim. Nurses also participated in a rally, calling for accountability and action.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders have called for a CBI investigation, with senior BJP leader Agnimitra Paul questioning the timing of the post-mortem and the handling of the case. “The child had injuries… She was killed after being raped. We want a CBI investigation. Why was the post-mortem done in the evening?” Paul demanded.

Dr. Sandip Ghosh, Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that the victim was like a daughter to him, and vowed that those responsible for the heinous crime would be brought to justice.
