Hollywood studios in Los Angeles have announced plans to develop a new “Hunger Games” movie based on Suzanne Collins’ upcoming novel.
Collins revealed on Thursday that the fifth book in her dystopian series, titled “Sunrise on the Reaping,” will be released next year. Francis Lawrence, who directed the previous four films in the franchise, is expected to return as director. The project will be produced under Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson’s Color Force banner.
The “Hunger Games” series, known for its exploration of themes like survival, oppression, rebellion, and the consequences of power, began with Collins’ first book “The Hunger Games,” followed by “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay.”
Lionsgate brought these novels to life with Jennifer Lawrence starring in “The Hunger Games” (2012) and its three sequels: “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.”
Set in the dystopian nation of Panem, the story features the wealthy Capitol and 13 districts in various states of poverty. Annually, children from the first 12 districts are chosen via lottery to participate in a deadly televised event known as The Hunger Games.
In 2020, Suzanne Collins expanded the universe with a prequel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” which Lionsgate adapted into a film released in 2023, starring Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler.
