In “Moana 2,” Moana teams up once again with Maui, the shapeshifting demigod, for a new adventure. According to Disney, “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

The original “Moana” was well-received by critics and audiences, earning a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and an 89% audience score. The film featured hit songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, such as “You’re Welcome,” sung by Dwayne Johnson, and “Shiny,” performed by Jermaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords.

What does the “Moana 2” trailer reveal?

The “Moana 2” trailer shows Moana and Maui setting sail on a new journey three years after the original film’s events. In a voiceover, Moana says, “This is a call from the ancestors to sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean.”

The trailer also features returning characters, including Moana’s animal companions Heihei the chicken and Pua the pig. Who stars in “Moana 2”?

Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprise their roles as Moana and Maui. At the 2024 CinemaCon, Johnson shared that playing Maui is deeply personal for him, drawing inspiration from his grandfather, high chief Peter Maivia.

The film is directed and written by David G. Derrick Jr., known for his work on “Strange World,” “Encanto,” and “Raya and the Last Dragon.”

While Lin-Manuel Miranda is not returning for “Moana 2,” Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi will return to compose the score and write songs. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, known for their Grammy-winning “Bridgerton” musical, will take over Miranda’s role in songwriting.
