Total 30 countries are the part of NATO. 28 are European countries while 2 are North American countries. NATO’s purpose is to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means.
US and its allies were trying to make Ukraine a part of NATO and the Russian president considered it a threat to Moscow (the capital of Russia). Putin said that he would not remain silent if Ukraine tried to become part of NATO. Russia did not receive any fine response from Ukraine about its entry into NATO. Hence, Russia attacked Ukraine after warnings. Although, US and other countries were trying to convince Putin but he didn’t listen to anyone.

On thursday, Vladimir Putin announced open military operations in Ukraine and Russian troops started attacking on Ukraine’s military bases in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa. Russian troops and tanks entered into Ukraine and fired missiles.
US President Joe Biden and other countries announced sanctions on Russia
US President Joe Biden said Putin is the aggressor and he chooses war. Joe Biden announces additional sanctions on Russia. US and its allies will block the assets of 4 large Russian banks and impose export controls. US sanctions also focused on military and financial institutions of Belarus as Russia is taking the help of Belarus.
UK President Boris Johnson said he would aim to cut Russia off from the UK’s financial market. The European Union and other western allies, including South Korea, Japan and Australia also announced sanctions. Their aim is to weak Russia financially so that it can’t support its military for war.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky responds to Russian attack
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky urged residents to remain calm and stay at home. He also pleaded to World leaders to put more severe sanctions on Russia. President said that Ukraine will defend itself and he also ordered full military mobilisation.
Zelensky revealed that several casualties have been witnessed after the attack. About 137 civilians and military personnel had been killed in the country on the first day of the Russia invasion. He also said 316 people have been wounded.
As people are fleeing from Ukraine, President Zolensky appealed to men aged 18 to 60 not to leave the country.
