Dhanteras is an auspicious occasion of hindus which comes two days before diwali. It marks the beginning of the five day diwali festivities. This year, Dhanteras or Dhantryodashi falls on October 29, 2024.
It is celebrated on the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik as per the hindu calendar. Dhanteras is made up of two words ‘Dhan’ and ‘Teras’. ‘Dhan’ means wealth and ‘Teras’ means thirteen. It is celebrated with great pomp and show across the world especially in India.
On this day, people purchase gold, silver ornaments, jewellery, utensils and other home appliances as it brings good luck, wealth and prosperity in home. Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber are worshipped on this day. People burn lamps or diyas all around the home at the evening.
